The Ultimate Handbook for Website Builder Selection

Website builders enable you to build a world-class website without spending tens of thousands of dollars on a designer. They offer a user-friendly interface that makes it simple to make a site with a high level of polish and functionality.

But not all website builder tools are created equal. How you select the right one to use depends on what your goals are and what your level of expertise is. Here are four questions to ask yourself when choosing a website builder:

What do you want to accomplish with your site?
A website is a critical marketing tool for any business. It can help you attract new customers and drive sales, as well as communicate with existing ones. But it takes a lot of time and energy to maintain and update, especially if you’re swamped with day-to-day operations.

Website building tools let you create a site with minimal effort, but they don’t eliminate the need for ongoing maintenance. If you want a site that requires a significant amount of time and attention, consider using a custom web design service instead of a website builder.

Do you have the resources to customize and maintain your site?
Most site builders have a fairly steep learning curve, so they’re not the best option for people who aren’t tech-savvy or accustomed to working with complicated software. If you’re a technophobe, look for a site builder that offers an intuitive, easy-to-use interface. Look for a “What You See Is What You Get” (WYSIWYG) builder, which means that what you see when editing is exactly how your website will appear once it’s live.

How picky are you?
If you’re the kind of person who can’t stand to settle for anything less than perfect, a site builder probably isn’t the best fit for you. You’ll be much happier with a custom- designed site from a professional web designer who can accommodate your ultra- picky standards. But if you’re just looking to make the most of your website, nearly all site builders offer tools that will let you tweak settings and noodle with fonts until they’re just right.

On average, website builders cost between $4 and $25 a month. Figure out your budget, and choose a plan that’s affordable over the long term. You’ll also want to take into account what features come with each package, and whether they align with your website’s capabilities.

Each website builder works a little differently, so it’s important to look for educational materials that walk you through the process. For example, some website builder tools will provide a color wheel that lets you select a specific color, and then show you a wide range of colors that look good with it. Others will let you test a color on your site before committing to it.

This will save you the frustration of settling for a color that doesn’t work once you’ve published your site.
